Finding the right day program for young people with disability can make a meaningful difference in confidence, independence, and everyday life.
At The Junction Works, our day programs are designed to support participants as they build new skills, explore interests, and work towards their goals — including pathways to employment.
In this blog, we’re sharing a wonderful story about one of our participants — a real example of how the right support can make a meaningful difference in a young person’s confidence, independence, and future opportunities.
Meet Thomas
“As a parent, we feel blessed with the care that Thomas is receiving at TJW.”
One of our youngest and newest Austral Day Program participants, Thomas, joined The Junction Works in late 2025 as he transitioned from high school after finishing Year 12.
Thomas thoroughly enjoyed his trial period with us and has continued attending since the start of this year. He loves cooking, is a fantastic baker, and even runs his own small business creating and selling sweet treats.
Building Confidence and Skills Through Austral Day Programs
Thomas’ parents, Nick and Rebecca, shared that they “have seen such growth [with Thomas] over the last couple of months.”
Since joining the Day Program, Thomas has been an enthusiastic and engaged participant, showing interest in new activities and continuing to build his key sign language and AUSLAN skills with the support of our dedicated team.
Exploring Pathways to Employment
As part of his journey, Thomas has taken part in work experience with an external organisation and recently joined a pre-employment program to explore opportunities for future work.
Nick and Rebecca shared that they are “firm believers in giving back to society and understand that with hard work comes great rewards.” They continue to encourage Thomas to believe that anything is possible.
With his persistence, dedication, and hard work, Thomas was recently offered a part-time position, a significant milestone we are incredibly proud to celebrate.
Rebecca also shared that Thomas “absolutely loves coming to The Junction Works, and of course, this will not be changing at all.”
Support That Builds Confidence at the Right Pace
We recently facilitated a petting zoo experience at our Austral Day Program. Knowing that Thomas can feel overwhelmed around animals, his Senior Support Worker introduced a gradual, step-by-step approach – beginning with observing from outside the enclosure, and slowly building up to closer interaction at his own pace.
With the right support and encouragement, Thomas grew in confidence and was soon comfortable enough to pat the animals.
Everyone is so proud of Thomas –
“Wow, wow, wow. Thanks for all you do supporting Thomas.”
What the Right Support Can Make Possible
We are so proud of Thomas and everything he has achieved in such a short period of time. His journey is a great example of what can happen when the right support is in place.
