South West Sydney Disability Awards 2004The Junction Category 4 - Community Based NGO’s
For supporting people with a disability and creating a positive
impact on the needs of people with a disability
This organisation had the good fortune to collaborate with The Junction Works in July this year on a project called the SPARK FESTIVAL. We had 12 artists over various disciplines in line arts — music, theatre, drama, visual at, circus, downing & movement spend 3 days of intensive workshops and performances with 100 young people experiencing a disability SPARK FESTIVAL, to facilitate access to the creative arts by the community with a specialised focus on working with marginalised groups - ie Mental Health, Disabilities or Youth at Risk. We have run many projects during our career in community arts and our experience with The Junction Works stands head and shoulders above most! The Junction Works have a unique understanding of the power of arts and the key to inclusion; they are definitely leaders in the field of creating opportunities for their clients' health and well—being in creative and artistic pursuits. SPARK FESTIVAL was an amazing success and the ongoing outcomes such as further collaboration with artists and their client group, continual mentoring and interaction between artists and clients, yet most of all the desire for all involved to do it all again speak volumes for the experience. The Junction Works provided exception: logistic support and infrastructure that provided the perfect foundation for a project of this nature. The sensibility they displayed makes then more than worthy of acknowledgement of this order, they in fact are a shining light in the world of NGO services NATIONALLY - and we know cause we work with many organisation both Nationally and internationally

As a mother of a Downs Syndrome daughter who attends
The Junction Works Atlas 1, I wish to nominate The Junction
Works for the Award
The reasons for my nomination are as follows:
1. The program my daughter is involved in since she left Mater Dei in 2000 has been one which gives her confidence, social skills, literacy, numeracy, computer sport, interaction with her peers plus work experiences.
2 The staff are caring, dedicated and friendly and are always there for advice and help.
3. Atlas has become a major part of my daughter's life and is always happy to attend. She always feels safe and a part of a group where she is liked and respected.
4. At Attas the management, from the staff to Head Office
(The Junction) are always there for advise and assistance in all matters making communication easy.
5. The bigger picture is that Atlas has given my daughter the opportunity to increase her everyday personal, living and social skills and has formed many friendships with other clients.
6. She has also gained skills to advance in work experiences plus accessing the community e.g. shops, banks, recreational centres, library, excursion and conferences (from 1 day to 3 days) at a time.
My daughter was very comfortable being away from home and felt safe and among people who cared. Please consider my nomination for The Junction Atlas 1 as this centre has made a world of difference to many young adults.
