Our Behaviour Support Team is committed to working with individuals, families and service providers to assist them to understand a person's challenging behaviours as a form of communication, and to implement effective strategies to reduce behaviours and improve the person's quality of life.
Our Behaviour Support Team uses an approach called Positive Behaviour Support.
Positive Behaviour Support is an evidence-based approach to supporting people with intellectual disabilities who use challenging behaviour.
Positive Behaviour Support seeks to both improve the quality of life of the person with a disability and reduce the impact of the person's challenging behaviour. The approach involves
- understanding why a person needs to engage in challenging behaviour through a Behavioural Assessment, including finding and modifying any environmental causes for the behaviour
- teaching the person new skills to meet their needs without having to resort to challenging behaviour, and
- assisting parents and carers to implement a plan to support the person's new skills and to reduce any triggers which may lead to their challenging behaviour.
